“18.1% of U.S adults endured an anxiety disorder such as posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and specific phobias. Among the 20.2 million adults in the U.S. who suffered a substance use disorder, 50.5%—10.2 million adults—had a co-occurring mental illness.
The current budget has reduced funding for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment Programs of Regional and National Significance by ~$600 million.
Those who support increased government spending believe mental health issues are a crippling disorder and should be given priority. Opponents argue that there are greater pressing concerns to focus on than mental health.
