Whom can you designate to be the beneficiary?

Any person, firm, corporation or legal entity, including your own, can become a beneficiary. If married service members make somebody a beneficiary other than their spouse or child, then the Department of Defense will notify their spouse that there has been a change unless the spouse is already aware of the change or the spouse was not the previous beneficiary before the change. Additionally, for the determination of a beneficiary, state divorce decrees, separation documents, or any other court documents are not required.
