What can I do to prepare for burial in a national cemetery?

Gravesites in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national cemeteries cannot be reserved in advance; however, reservations made prior to 1962 will be honored. Families are encouraged to prepare in advance by discussing cemetery options, collecting the veteran¬ís military information including discharge papers, and by contacting the cemetery where burial is desired. On the other hand, if you wish to be buried in a private cemetery with a government issued head stone or marker, you must complete VA form 40-1330 and keep it ready so that there won’t be any delay.
