What are my burial benefits and allowances?

All armed forces personnel and Veterans who meet minimum active service duty requirements and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable are eligible for burial in a national cemetery. Note, however, anyone dismissed with a dishonorable discharge are excluded from this benefit. Dependent family members are also eligible. Members of the reserve components of the Armed Forces who die while on active duty or while performing training duty, or who have 20 years of service in the reserve components of the Armed Forces creditable for retired pay, may also be eligible for burial. Burial services include selecting a gravesite in any national cemetery with available space, the opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, a grave liner and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, at no cost to the family. If a Veteran is buried at a cemetery other than a national cemetery due to the request of the spouse, they may still be entitled to a headstone or marker, a burial flag, a Presidential Memorial Certificate and burial allowances.
