VA During What Periods Are You Covered?

Veterans, having SGLI, are covered during the following periods: Full Time Coverage – Active Duty: If the person is on active duty and has opted for full-time membership, the coverage remains active for a whole year. Coverage is considered to be effective during the active duty period, during the inactive duty training period and also for 120 days after your release from active duty. Reserve/ Guard Duty: If you serve in Reserve/National Guard, and are assigned to a unit in which you complete at least twelve periods of inactive duty creditable for the purposes of retirement, then full time coverage will be activated for the entire year. You will also be covered for 120 days after your release from duty. Part Time Coverage This is applicable for those serving in Reserve/National Guard but are not eligible for full time coverage, i.e., they remain active only for a few days in a year.
