TRICARE Prime Extended Options

Enrollment in TRICARE Prime’s basic health care plan is limited geographically to beneficiaries who are near military treatment facilities.  However, there are several different PRIME options for active-duty servicemembers and beneficiaries who are 50 miles or more from the nearest MTF, are stationed overseas, or are stationed overseas further than 50 miles from an overseas military facility.  Please note that these extended options are not available to retirees and their family members.

TRICARE Prime Remote

TRICARE Prime Remote allows servicemembers and TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries to see civilian in-network health care providers when the sponsoring servicemember is stationed or assigned more than 50 miles from the nearest MTF.

As with the regular Prime plan, National Guard and Reserve servicemembers and their families are also eligible for Prime Remote if the sponsoring servicemember is activated for 30 days or more, however, beneficiaries must actually be living in the same household as their sponsor.

Surviving beneficiaries of a deceased active-duty servicemember continue to be eligible for Prime Remote, however, eligibility for more than 3 years after the servicemember’s death is limited to children only, not spouses.

TRICARE Prime Overseas

TRICARE Overseas Prime provides the same coverage overseas that TRICARE Prime provides at home in the United States.  If there are no in-network providers in a particular location, deductibles and cost-shares may be waived with a PCM referral to a provider authorized by the location’s military service center.

Any servicemember enrolled in TRICARE Prime will automatically have their health care plan changed to Prime Overseas upon deployment, however, family members must be signed up to receive coverage, and can only be enrolled with command sponsorship.  Command sponsorship will be indicated on the servicemember’s change-of-station orders and authorizes the listed family members to travel overseas with their sponsor at the government’s expense.

For any enrollment questions, contact the appropriate TRICARE Area Office.  You can locate contact information on the TRICARE website at http://www.tricare.mil/ContactUs/CallUs/TAOs.aspx

TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas

TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas (formerly TRICARE Global Remote Overseas) is available in designated overseas areas in Eurasia, Africa, Latin America, Canada, and the Pacific.  A combination of Prime Remote and Prime Overseas, this plan allows beneficiaries to see providers outside of a military facility at no additional cost with a referral from their PCM at their stationed location.

Unlike Prime Overseas, servicemembers must sign up for Prime Remote Overseas coverage.   Command sponsorship is also required when enrolling other family members in Prime Remote Overseas.
