Certainly. To increase the coverage of VGLI up to the SGLI amount, the service members have about 240 days without having to answer any health questions, starting from the date of their separation. For instance: John Jones was separated from his service on November 1st 2012, with a SGLI amount of $400,000 and then applied in VGLI on November 15, 2012, only for $200,000. John wants to increase the coverage of VGLI after a few months from an amount of $200,000 to $400,000. Until 29th May 2013, John Jones will have time to apply for an extra $200,000 of VGLI coverage without answering for any health questions. In order to get approval of his VGLI, John must answer to the health questions from 28th May 2013 until the completion of his 1 year and 120 day period of VGLI application. If John Jones doesnt apply for the additional VGLI coverage during the 1 year 120 days period of VGLI application, he would still have the eligibility to get the extra VGLI coverage for each 5 years period.
