The Civilian Health and Medical Program (CHAMPVA)

The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs, or “CHAMPVA,” provides health care benefits for certain VA beneficiaries under certain circumstances. Beneficiaries who are eligible for TRICARE coverage are not eligible for CHAMPVA coverage.

Spouses and children of:

  • living or deceased veterans who have been rated permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability (including Primary Caregivers)
  • deceased veterans who died from a service-connected disability, and
  • deceased veterans who died in the line of duty but are not otherwise eligible for TRICARE are all eligible to enroll in CHAMPVA.

NOTE: Surviving spouses who remarry before the age of 55 will lose their CHAMPVA benefits.
