The Most Prized Possessions of The U.S. Navy

Founded in 1775 as the Continental Navy, the U.S. Navy is older than the U.S. With 430 ships and submarines, the American Navy has been involved in more than ten wars and includes more than 16 different vessels. Here’s a look inside the most powerful American Navy vessels-

Gerald R. Ford-class Aircraft Carrier

Belonging to the class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, Gerald R. Ford-class is the latest addition to the Navy. This ship is almost 1106 ft long and can carry about 75 aircraft. Decked with the latest technology like an electronic aircraft launch system, sensors and self-defense systems, this vessel is expected to replace the Nimitz class aircraft carrier.

 The Zumwalt-class destroyer

The Zumwalt-class destroyer is a guided-missile destroyer designed for multi-surface warfare and stealth missions. The ship has two advanced gun systems, automation and fire protection, a peripheral vertical launch system and a common display system.

The Virginia-class submarine

Incorporated with the latest technology in stealth, intelligence gathering and weapon systems, the Virginia-class submarine is the most powerful attack submarine in the U.S. Navy. This vessel belongs to the class of nuclear-powered cruise missile fast-attack submarines. They can do everything from launching cruise missiles to deploying a SEAL team underwater.

Wasp-class amphibious assault ship

The Wasp-class entered the forces in 1989. This landing helicopter dock (LHD) amphibious assault ship can transport heavy assault and support vehicles. This vessel is capable of transporting the entire United States Marine Corps Marine Expeditionary Unit at once.

Independence-class littoral combat ship

This small, agile and multipurpose warship is designed to operate near shore and can travel at a speed of 51 mph. Unlike traditional fighting ships, the independence-class littoral combat ship carries a default armament for self-defense. The ship’s modules consist of human-crewed aircraft, off-board sensors, crewless aircraft and mission-manning detachments.
