Can SGLI Coverage be extended if you become disabled?

In cases where you are totally disabled during the time of separation from active duty, you can get an extension in your full time coverage as long as the disability continues, for maximum of two years. The extension will be automatically get converted to VGLI as long as the initial VGLI premium is paid after the end of Disability Extension period. You will not be able to acquire commercial Life Insurance at standard rates because of the disability, if you get the disability during training period or while under part time coverage. Your SGLI coverage gets extended to 12 days following the duty period when the disability occurred. You can apply for 12 day extension for VGLI. Important: the extension of SGLI is not automatic in cases of total disability. Application to Office of Service members Group Life Insurance for the extension is required.
